1857 California Gold Indian - Bear "1/2" Octagon Token NGC MS67

Privately minted in 1857 when many California gold coins were produced before the new U.S. Mint standardized coinage, this exceptionally well preserved Indian Head - Bear "1/2" Octagon coin is graded Mint State 67 by NGC. The gold weight contained in these coins were considered fractional and minute that the coins were referred to as "tokens" rather than coins.
 
Most of these privately issued California gold rush era coins are extremely rare today, as most were melted down and converted to official coins by the U.S. Mint.
 
The obverse features the iconic Indian Head design, whilst the reverse depicts a bear alongside the "1/2" mark, denoting its half dollar denomination. The writing on the reverse reads, "California Gold" and is indicative of the period of time during the California Gold Rush in which this coin was created and intended for circulation.
