2025-S Ida B. Wells Silver Proof Quarter: CAC PR70DCAM

The 2025 San Francisco minted Ida B. Wells quarter honors one of the most fearless journalists in American history. This stunning example is graded Proof 70 Deep Cameo by CAC, the highest possible grade.

The woman on the coin

Ida B. Wells was born in Holly Springs, Mississippi, on July 16, 1862, into slavery. She became a teacher and then a newspaper writer. Her reporting documented hundreds of lynchings in the South and challenged the excuses offered for them. She published influential works like Southern Horrors and A Red Record to debunk racist justifications for mob violence. She became a co-owner and editor of the Memphis newspaper Free Speech and Headlight, writing fearless editorials that forced her to flee the South after her press was destroyed. Later she turned her energy to the vote. In 1913 she founded the Alpha Suffrage Club in Chicago, one of the first Black women's suffrage organizations in the country. In 2020, Wells was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize special citation for her outstanding and courageous reporting on violence against African Americans.

The coin

The portrait shows Wells from the waist up in late 19th century attire. The legend reads "Civil Rights Activist, Suffragist, Journalist." The 2025 San Francisco struck is a 90% silver proof from the American Women Quarters program. Its Deep Cameo finish gives strong contrast between the frosted devices and the brilliant, blast white fields. Photos do not fully capture the blast white fields, which are far brighter in hand.

What the grade means

PR70 is a flawless proof, and the DCAM designation confirms the full deep cameo contrast. CAC's green bean sticker shows the coin was independently reviewed and approved. For buyers, that means a coin that is exceptional for its grade and the epitome of perfection. For collectors, it is a top-tier example of a modern commemorative with a meaningful connection to American history.
