This 1772-1821 Spanish Silver 1/2 Reales offers a tangible link to a pivotal era when French colonists in St. Louis held a monopoly on trade with Santa Fe, granted by the Spanish crown before the Louisiana Purchase. As Mexican independence in 1821 opened the frontier territories to new commerce, William Becknell’s establishment of the Santa Fe Trail marked a significant expansion of trade routes from his base of operations in Franklin, Missouri to the eponymous Sante Fe.

During the early days of the United States, prior to the establishment of the mint and the creation of the dollar; the coins circulating in the country were predominately milled Spanish silver. These reales were used along the Santa Fe Trail and were legal tender in the U.S. until 1857.
