1853 California Gold Liberty Wreath Octagon Token NGC MS67

Privately minted in 1853 when many California gold coins were produced before the new U.S. Mint standardized coinage, this exceptionally well preserved Liberty Wreath Octagon coin is graded Mint State 67 by NGC. The gold weight contained in these coins were considered fractional and minute that the coins were referred to as "tokens" rather than coins.
 
Most of these privately issued California gold rush era coins are extremely rare today, as most were melted down and converted to official coins by the U.S. Mint.
 
The obverse features the iconic Lady Liberty design, whilst the reverse depicts a beaded edge and a wreath whilst the writing in the center reads, "California Gold" which is indicative of the period of time during the California Gold Rush in which this coin was created and intended for circulation.
