This 1877 S Chopmarked Trade Dollar, graded PCGS VF Detail with a special 40th Anniversary Label, is made from 90% silver and minted in San Francisco. Designed by William Barber, it was struck specifically for trade with Asia and features small punched or stamped symbols—known as chopmarks—applied by Asian merchants, which are now prized as authentic badges of global trade history. Once considered to be damage, these marks add a unique layer of historical significance to the coin. This coin has been graded Very Fine Detail by PCGS, whose graders noted prior cleaning, and is encased within a flawless, slightly larger PCGS holder. An additional historical aspect to this holder is the retro, vintage label that PCGS used on its 2nd Generation holders and on its doilies. Whilst this label is a modern reproduction celebrating PCGS's 40th Anniversary, it adds another aspect of uniqueness to this already unique and historically significant coin.
